North Eastern Space Applications Centre (NESAC) is an autonomous organization under Department of Space, Govt. of India, located at Umiam about 20 km before reaching Shillong, along the Guwahati-Shillong Highway in Meghalaya.
The Centre has provided more than 19 years of dedicated service to the eight states of North Eastern Region (NER) of India using space science and technology. One of the major objectives of the Centre is to provide an operational remote sensing and geographic information system aided natural resource information base to support activities on development / management of natural resources and infrastructure planning in the region. Application of geospatial technology in Agriculture and allied areas is one of the major activities of the Centre

NESAC Outreach Programme

NESAC is undertaking wide range of capacity building activities through multiple collaborations with IITs, NITs, Central and State Universities of the regions, R&D institutions and a large number of user departments. NESAC has been conducting 2 weeks courses for the past three years on Basics of Remote Sensing and GIS as well as advanced course on UAV remote sensing. Many tailormade courses specific to the user departments such as forest dept, agriculture dept., water resources dept. soil conservation dept. etc., have also been conducted. Response for these programs were quite encouraging. So far more than 500 numbers of participants have been trained in various aspects of RS and GIS.

Facilities at NESAC

The centre is well equipped with state of the art facilities in the areas of Remote Sensing (RS) and Geographical Information System (GIS), Disaster Management, Satellite Communication and Space & Atmospheric Science Research. The Centre has required IT infrastructures for carrying out research and outreach activity and also to provide operational services. Internet connectivity is provided throughout the NESAC office building. Sufficient numbers of image processing and GIS software like Erdas, Geomatica, ESRI ArcGIS, eCognition, Supermap, Gama, TNT mips etc. along with other open source software and tools are available for various thematic applications.. The Centre is also equipped with sufficient number of workstations, printers, plotters, scanners, GPS systems, GPS-enabled digital cameras, GAGAN GPS and high end DGPS for advanced and precise ground survey applications.

The outreach facility of the Centre meant for capacity building has become fully functional since the beginning of 2019 with smart class rooms, conference halls with canteen, gym facility and trainee’s hostel
